Punching bag for me came from a day,
it was one of those not so positive days
in the life of a music business person.
I had this one particular day,
it was just really stressful.
It's just one of those days where just nothing went your way
I felt like I was up against the world.
It's just a tough day.
And so,
got home at the end of the day
and I was in the closet with Jennifer
and we were just kind of talking about things
that had happened that day and I just kind
of leaned up against the wall and I told her,
I said,
you know,
right now I just feel like
a punching bag.
I just feel like life is beating me up.
And when I said that,
I'm thinking,
wait a minute,
it sounded like a song title,
it sounded like something that everybody could
relate to.
It wasn't just a song about me or my day.
I felt like this is something that
can really strike a chord with everybody.
I feel like everybody has these kinds of days.
One of the first writing appointments I had for the year in
2011 was with my buddy and long time songwriting partner,
Pat McLaughlin.
He came in and I shared the idea with him and he agreed that
it was a great idea and that we needed to be careful with it.
And so,
I told him,
I was like,
I want it to be up-tempo,
I want it to be a positive,
hopeful kind of song,
but I want it to express that idea of life is tough.
You get a lot of punches thrown at you
and a lot of times you're not in control,
but in spite of that,
you just got to keep moving forward.
You got to take those punches and just be tough
and endure it and move on to the next thing.
We tried to be as clever as we possibly could without being hokey,
but like I say, it's really a driving song.
I've actually used this song to run with and work
out with and I guess this is my eye of the tiger,
I guess.
